The campus setting can be particularly challenging for women trying to lose weight. In a new Temple University study, Onward to Weight Loss Success (OWLS), students learn about such topics as emotional eating, alcohol and weight gain, dining out, healthful cooking, and "mindful eating"—being in the moment, so to speak, rather than being distracted in front of a TV. "There are very few weight-loss programs designed specifically for college students, and there isn't a lot of data about the efficacy of the programs," said Nicole Patience, a clinical dietitian at Temple Student Health Services. The program will be monitored and evaluated by Temple's Center for Obesity Research and Education.

According to Simon, many treated a vote for Obama like the purchase of a new and improved car or computer: When the improvements and changes didn’t happen overnight, some—especially upper-middle-class suburbanites—moved onto another product and now the president’s approval ratings—themselves a kind of consumer barometer—are steadily declining. “The Starbucks business model has become for many a model for politics,” he wrote.
