Small changes in diet yield big results for heart health

March is National Nutrition Month, and this year's theme is "Eat Right with Color." In other words, eat your vegetables — they are rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber that your body needs to feel healthy and energized, and may help reduce the risk of obesity and many diseases, including heart disease. Alfred Bove, an emeritus professor of medicine at Temple, said the biggest problem he sees in his practice is that people eat too much food, which puts them more at risk for diabetes and blood lipids problems. "If I were going to teach a cooking class, the first thing I would talk about is portion control, with moderate fats, moderate carbs — not low on either and with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits."
