This fall, a team of Temple professors piloted a project to create alternatives to the textbook. Steven J. Bell, associate university librarian, said the goal was to create new kinds of learning experiences while saving students money. Kristina M. Baumli, a lecturer in English, said she joined the project because textbooks don’t always meet the intellectual curiosity of students. By requiring students to grapple with primary sources, she said, she could emphasize process rather than memorization of facts in a book.
