Temple study: More sleep can help shed pounds
Temple employee Frank Connelly weighed 260 pounds and it was slowing him down. He joined a weight loss study at Temple and was given basic nutrition information — but also something unexpected: tips for getting a better night's sleep. "Studies have been very consistent that people who sleep less, weigh more," said Gary Foster, director of Temple's Center for Obesity Research. Foster says there are three reasons poor sleep leads to weight gain: The more you're awake; the more you eat; you make bad decisions when you’re tired; and less sleep affects hormones related to appetite.
