Faculty Focus: Geologist Laura Toran
Video Production:
Gina Benigno
In this Faculty Focus segment, groundwater geologist Laura Toran uses Temple's new Science Education and Research Center (SERC) as a living laboratory for both research and teaching.
In urban environments, effective stormwater management is critical. Stormwater runoff, created by an abundance of impervious surfaces such as sidewalks, streets and parking lots, can lead to excess water in sewage systems, contaminated rivers and flooding.
Toran uses groundwater monitoring wells dug beneath SERC both for region-wide monitoring projects and to teach students about stormwater monitoring and management issues.
