From studying abroad to Fulbright scholar: Temple student lands a teaching role in Spain
Julia Mayro heads to Spain to teach English to elementary and high school students.
Name: Julia Mayro
Degree: BA, Psychology with a Spanish minor
College: College of Liberal Arts
Hometown: Jenkintown, Pennsylvania
Graduation year: 2023
Big Future: A Fulbright scholar in Spain.
Why Temple: Julia was born into the Owl family—her father, Gene Mayro, is the director of information technology for the TECH Center and has been an employee at Temple for more than 30 years. When it was time for Julia to start thinking about college, she already felt well-connected to Temple. She loved that Temple is a big university in the heart of Philadelphia that offers local experiential learning and volunteering opportunities. She was also excited by the variety of Temple programs and ultimately focused her studies on psychology in the College of Liberal Arts.
Study abroad experience: With a goal of becoming a bilingual therapist, Julia was intent on using her study abroad experience to learn Spanish. Living with a host family in Oviedo, Spain, and being paired with a local student from the University of Oviedo, helped her immensely in accomplishing this goal. Julia also took advantage of the opportunity to learn about the history and culture of Spain from her host mom, who studied the anthropology of the small farming villages in the region. The study abroad experience ignited Julia’s desire to become a Fulbright scholar in Spain.
Philly life: Julia loves Philadelphia’s culture and concerts, especially the Philadelphia Orchestra. She enjoys live music and regularly attends Temple concerts performed by the Temple Jazz Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony. The variety of cultural foods in the city piques her interest, too. Her favorite food spot is Tambayan, a Filipino food stand that serves egg rolls, spaghetti dishes, BBQ pork skewers and more at the Reading Terminal Market.
Temple Made moment: Being selected for a Fulbright Scholarship to teach English to students in Spain was among Julia’s proudest accomplishments at Temple. Last summer, she met with Barbara Gorka, director of scholar development and fellowships advising; Catie Duffield, a Temple graduate assistant; and Jaime Durán, the director of the Temple in Spain program, to begin the process of pursuing a Fulbright. Whether it was helping to proofread her essay or provide letters of recommendation, she felt that the Temple community helped her every step of the way to land the Fulbright Scholarship in Spain.
Hootable: “Temple instills a strong work ethic in its students. I would not have gotten this Fulbright Scholarship if I had not worked hard all through last summer crafting eight different drafts of the same essay. Temple will give you the resources and the support you need to achieve your goals. If you are willing to work hard, you can achieve anything.”
