Career fair offers Temple students early shot at job market

Temple’s 2010 Career Fair brought out juniors, seniors, graduates and alumni to put their best foot forward and network with prospective employers while sharpening their job seeking skills.

Even with a flagging economy, more than 50 employers were on hand to recruit students for internships and full-time job opportunities, a 20 percent increase over last year. Industries represented included finance, education, retail corporations, law enforcement agencies and social service organizations.

“Despite what we read in the newspapers about limited jobs, (employers) are recruiting,” said Linda Lawton, associate director of Temple’s Career Center. “They’re filling positions and they’re still choosing to come to campus and choose our students above others. It’s really great to see that.”

The event also offered opportunities for students to sharpen their job seeking skills. Career Center staff met with students to review their resumes and offer on-the-spot advice for packaging their education and experiences before meeting with employers at the event.

“We give students one final opportunity to have our career coaches review their resume and make sure they’re accurately and effectively highlighting their skills and accomplishments,” said Lawton. “If they have to make some changes, we have laptops and printers available so they can make those changes right away, print off as many copies as they want and bring them on in.”
