Every night, millions watch the “Late Show with David Letterman” on their television sets at home.

But Eric Watts, a graduate of the broadcasting, telecommunications and mass media program of the School of Communications and Theater, has had the best seat in the house for the Letterman show for the last three months — from backstage.

Watts has been an intern on “Late Show.” He got the gig through a friend in the communications program who had been an intern there herself, he said.

“I was a fan and it sounded like a great experience,” Watts said. ”I applied and was fortunate enough to get one of the last summer slots.”

But he had also applied for an internship at ESPN. When he was picked for both, Watts had to make a choice. He went with the worldwide sports network and spent the summer in its master control room.

However, the Letterman folks didn’t forget about him.

“They were nice enough to tell me that I could intern during the spring,” he said. “But it had to be full time. So I worked out my schedule and took some online classes.”

Watts got bitten by the television bug when he was in high school while working with the video production crew, he said. He’s tried a little on-air work, but finds he’s more interested in production.

Now that he’s leaving Temple and heading to Bristol, Conn., for a job in ESPN’s master control room, Watts may be able to relive his favorite moment from four years here whenever he wants — especially since it’s a sports moment.

“My favorite moment was when we won the Atlantic 10 basketball championship,” he said. “I was in the basketball pep band and went to all of the home games, so it was good to seen them finally win the conference tournament.”
