When South Philadelphia’s famed Wachovia Spectrum permanently closed its gates last year, the Philadelphia KiXX professional soccer team was left without a place to play. Luckily, the organization has found a new home at Temple’s Liacouras Center, adding another option to the growing array of recreational and entertainment events on and around the Temple campus.

The KiXX are one of five members of the Major Indoor Soccer League, which features a
face-moving brand of the sport.

Among the most notable differences from the traditional game are the addition of boards
that prevent the ball from traveling out of play, penalties that result in a
power play for the opposing team and a scoring system that awards points
based on distance from the goal.

According to KiXX vice president Darcee’ Roberts, the Liacouras Center’s

design is well suited for the league’s style.

“The arena is very intimate, which creates a great place for the fans to watch a game up close,” said Roberts. “It’s fast paced, high scoring, end-to-end action.”

The team’s relocation to North Broad Street also provides an opportunity to grow its fan base, Roberts said. The Liacouras Center’s proximity to the Cecil B. Moore subway stop on SEPTA’s orange line makes it easy for long-time KiXX fans to get to home games. And the new connection to Temple has increased the team’s following among students.

“Moving to the Liacouras Center is a great opportunity for us to reach the college fan and expose them to professional indoor soccer,” Roberts said, adding that the organization has seen an increase in college ticket sales since it relocated.

Temple students are enthusiastic about the team’s move. Freshman Chris Olley remembers going to dozens of games as a youth with his grandparents, original season ticket holders.

“I haven’t had a chance to check them out at the Liacouras Center yet because of winter break,” Olley said. “But I’m definitely going to make it to some games this season.”

Students such as Olley can take advantage of student discounts offered at KiXX games. Tickets are $9 with a student ID, and dollar dog night and other targeted promotions add extra incentive.

Temple senior Luke Butler, who also remembers seeing the KiXX play as a child, has already found his way to a game and found it to be a great experience. “The nostalgia of simply going to a KiXX game made it fun in itself,” Butler said. “And the game is fast paced enough that it never gets dull.”
