The Office of the Provost has restructured to give more attention to the needs of non-tenure track and adjunct faculty, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Lisa Staiano-Coico announced today.

Nelia Viveiros has been appointed associate vice provost for faculty affairs. She will continue to report to Diane Maleson, the senior vice provost for faculty development and faculty affairs. The appointment takes effect immediately.

“This move will offer non-tenure track and adjunct faculty a clear ‘go-to’ person in my office,” the provost said. “Nelia Viveiros has an excellent knowledge of our faculty and is particularly well positioned for this role.”

Viveiros came to Temple in 2002 and has had a growing level of responsibilities in the provost’s office, with a strong focus on faculty hiring, promotions and related issues.

In her new role, Viveiros will be responsible and accountable for non-tenure track and adjunct faculty appointments and the effective university-wide administration of non-tenure track full-time and adjunct faculty appointees. She will take the lead in the timely and effective communication and dissemination of consistent information for non-tenure track and adjunct faculty. Viveiros will also establish an on-going interface for "problem-solving" and expert interpretation of non-tenure track and adjunct policy between the schools and colleges and the Office of Faculty Development and Faculty Affairs.

Also as part of the reorganization, Patricia Finley will become part of Maleson’s team providing technical support to the effort. She will transition to the senior vice provost’s office over the next several weeks.

The restructuring comes after several months of work by the provost’s office and human resources focusing on ways the university can better communicate and work with adjuncts and non-tenure track faculty.
