Scientists have pinpointed a hormone in muscle cells that triggers the benefit of exercise. Sounds promising so far, says Kevin Jon Williams, section chief of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Temple. “The discovery of irisin which is released from muscle during exercise is a major breakthrough,” he said. The hormone has a powerful effect on white fat which is stored as calories.
