Earthquake threat to local nuclear reactors
(There is no link to this story)
The 8.9 magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami have produced catastrophic results for nuclear power plants in northern Japan. But while the three nuclear power plants in the Philadelphia region have similar designs to their Japanese counterparts, the earthquakes in this part of the world make them much less vulnerable, says Temple geophysicist Jonathan Nyquist. "These are the kind of earthquakes that can knock a chimney down," he said. "Not the kind that are going to crack reactor vessels."
