S. Suresh Madhavan named dean of the School of Pharmacy

Dear members of the Temple community,

Following a national search, I am excited to share that S. Suresh Madhavan has been appointed dean of the School of Pharmacy, effective March 1, 2024.

Currently, Suresh is a professor of pharmacotherapy at the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) System College of Pharmacy in Fort Worth, Texas. Suresh served as dean at the UNTHSC College of Pharmacy from 2019 to 2023. As dean, he worked with his leadership team, faculty and staff to implement a strategic plan; recruit new faculty; strengthen policies and procedures; and focus on initiatives that support student success, research excellence and work-life balance. During his four years as dean, research funding at the college doubled.

Prior to his positions at UNTHSC, Suresh began his academic career as an assistant professor at the West Virginia University (WVU) School of Pharmacy. Over the next three decades, he held multiple positions at WVU, including professor and chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Systems and Policy in the School of Pharmacy.

Suresh’s primary research interests are connected to health services and outcomes, with a focus on reducing health disparities. As principal investigator, he has helped secure grants and contracts exceeding $35 million from federal and state agencies, as well as private corporations, and he has published over 110 peer-reviewed publications. For his contributions to healthcare and pharmacy research, he was awarded the 2018 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Paul R. Dawson Award for Excellence in Patient Care Research and in 2021 was awarded the Research Achievement Award from the American Pharmacists Association.

Suresh has a deep understanding of the complex and evolving landscape of healthcare. His commitment to preparing the next generation of pharmacists for the challenges and opportunities they will face has been at the forefront of his impactful career. He has led with understanding and care while also achieving excellence. I know with his experience and vision, Temple University School of Pharmacy will continue to advance and thrive. Learn more about Suresh.

I want to thank the search committee for their time and commitment to this important appointment. Please join me in welcoming Suresh to the Temple community.
