Recent executive orders

Dear Temple Students and Colleagues,

Like many organizations across the country, Temple University has been closely following developments at the federal level, including recent executive orders. The impact and the ramifications of many of these orders are still unknown, which has led to questions from students, faculty and staff.

While circumstances will continue to evolve over the coming weeks and months, one thing that will remain the same is Temple’s mission of access, opportunity, engagement and discovery. Since our founding in 1884, Temple has focused on providing educational and experiential opportunities to individuals from every walk of life. That mission will not change.

Since the transition, a team has been tracking these potential developments and identifying how they impact both Temple and higher education in general. We have been actively collaborating with other universities and agencies to better understand the impact of these changes. We will respond as needed, adapt to the changing environment and comply with the law. We will also be sure to keep you apprised of any updates.

The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) is following closely the impact of any agency pauses to federally funded research projects and has already been in touch with Temple’s research faculty and staff members. The situation is fluid; as of this writing, the Office of Management and Budget has reportedly rescinded the pause on federal grants and loans. OVPR will continue to share information with Temple’s research community as it becomes available. Research faculty and staff members should reach out to OVPR via its newly established federal funding guidance portal with any questions on information they are receiving from funding agencies. Please be aware that the pause did not impact individual student federal financial aid awards.

The uncertainty of the present moment has also led to an increase in rumors, which can quickly be amplified through social media. Please know that neither Temple’s Department of Public Safety nor the Philadelphia Police Department have any reports of federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents being on campus. All law enforcement actions on campus, however, would need to comply with typical processes, including a warrant or court order when appropriate. Please be assured that Temple follows all legal obligations as it pertains to the privacy of its students’ and employees’ personal information. As always, if you notice any concerning activity on campus, I ask that you immediately contact the Department of Public Safety at 215-204-1234.

I want to thank the entire Temple community for your continued commitment and patience during this challenging time. Please rest assured that we will remain steadfast in carrying out our research and our mission of providing all students with an excellent, affordable education.

Sincerely,

John Fry
President
