While the BP oil rig spill in the Gulf of Mexico might be bigger than the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska, the two cannot be compared because of the differing beach environments in which they have occurred, said Temple civil and environmental engineer Michel Boufadel. He said that the gravelly geology of the Alaska shoreline keeps the oil trapped, while erosion along the sandy beaches of the Gulf a decade from now could cause the oil to resurface.

A researcher has developed a material that resists water by imitating the texture and placement of spider hairs. In nature, the lotus leaf and certain insects are water resistant because hair spacing and surface tension cause water to bead up, says Temple associate biology professor Tonia Hsieh, whose conversations with the researcher influenced his design.
