Last spring, Temple got what is looking to be the campus’s answer to the Kimmel Center’s Verizon Hall, in the form of the new Temple Performing Arts Center, which is housed in the renovated Baptist Temple on North Broad Street. The result is one doozy of a venue. A partnership between Temple and Philly rock bookers Bryan Dilworth and Larry Magid has led to the booking of national talent. Upcoming shows include Fistful of Mercy, Rickie Lee Jones and Loretta Lynn.

Temple economist William Dunkelberg harshly criticized a provision in the health care bill that requires 1099 reports from small businesses on all payments in excess of $600, allegedly to prevent tax evasion. "The more we divert that time to paperwork and compliance with health care requirements, etc.," wrote Dunkelberg, "the less time the entrepreneur has to devote to producing goods and services that consumers want, and creating the jobs associated with serving those consumers."

Two prominent scholars at Temple's Beasley School of Law, David Post and Peter Spiro, visited the "Radio Times" studio to discuss the U.S. Constitution, its relevance and how it's being interpreted — especially during this election season. Some candidates have been questioning the separation of church and state, the definition of citizenship (the 14th Amendment) the government's right to tax (the 16th Amendment) and how senators are elected (the 17th Amendment).

Anger at presidents isn't anything new, but the tone has changed. Jan Ting of the Beasley School of Law tells his first-year students that they’re getting a glimpse of the animosity the country experienced after Abraham Lincoln was elected president. "Now, we don't just disagree with people," said Ting. "It's that they're bad people." Ting believes that this election cycle also has shown that it's wishful thinking to believe the country has become a "a post-racial society."

More than 3,000 haunted theme attractions open their doors nationwide every Halloween, earning an estimated $500 million. It turns out there's a science to creating a good scare. And the most effective attractions are designed to slowly build a feeling of controllable fear and anxiety. "There are safe thrills," said Frank Farley, a psychologist at Temple. "It's not like climbing Mt. Everest. You know you are going to come out O.K."

Temple student Brandon Huber grew a pair of enormous pumpkins this summer. Huber, a blue ribbon winner at the Philadelphia Flower Show and horticulture major at Temple, said genetics was a major factor in his success as well as having the right amount of space. "I started the seed, which was already adapted to local conditions, on April 25, considered a good starting date for this zone," said Huber. "It's based on the weigh-off date. You want the plant to be as fresh as possible."
