On Sunday, Oct. 3, in Central Park, Temple psychologist Kathy Hirsh-Pasek hosted more than 50,000 parents and children at the Ultimate Block Party. Studies show that over the past two decades children have lost eight hours of playtime per week. This decrease in playtime, coupled with an increase in sedentary time in front of computers, is contributing to childhood obesity and negatively impacting the development of children’s social skills, she says.

The New York Times published Temple psychologist Kathy Hirsh-Pasek's response to a recent Time's article on the decline of picture book reading. "Cuddling up for a bedtime story with Goodnight Moon or The Runaway Bunny sparks conversations that leap off the pages of a book. In these special moments, we build the foundation for literacy as children hear the rich vocabulary in stories and the language that fuels later reading," she wrote.

Jenny Rose Carey, director of Temple's Ambler Arboretum, hasn't watered her garden in six years. The water-free strategy is called xeriscaping. "This year was a really good test year," she said. Carey outlined her strategy, which involves the use of gravel, smart plant selection and avoiding fertilizers. "Start in a small area and see if it works for you," Carey advised.

The president made a lot of news in his forum with young voters today, and he'll be in Delaware tomorrow, along with Vice President Joe Biden, stomping for Democratic Senate Candidate Chris Coons. So the question is, is Obama overshadowing the campaigns? "It's a turnout issue, and that's why he's here," said David Farber, professor of history at Temple. "He's going to a state where he's going to have a new face in the Democratic senate."

The major story in this year's midterm election campaign has been the sheer volume of cash that special-interest groups are pumping into House and Senate races across the country, much of it from anonymous donors. Robin Kolodny, a Temple political scientist, said a recent controlled experiment suggested that voters might trust an ad more that comes from a group with a "feel-good name," but at this point it might be too late: "Political science tells us that by now most of the voters have made up their minds."

Innovative Tyler School of Art sculptor Karyn Olivier was profiled in the media in Trinidad and Tobago, where she was born. Olivier, who sometimes explores Caribbean themes in her art, is known for her large-scale work. "I think I was secretly afraid to make small work, doubting I could make it as powerful if it was small," Olivier said. "I really wanted to engage the viewer and thought I might have a better shot at it if I worked larger, using the human body as the gauge."
