The number of people in Pennsylvania who got health insurance from their employers dropped again this year for the ninth straight year, according to a recent report. "Most employers this year increased not only the amount but the share of the health insurance premiums that employees were asked to pay," said Thomas Getzen, professor of insurance and health management at Temple's Fox School of Business. "Everybody's tightening their belts. There are a couple of people that say I'll risk it for a year or two going bare."

As the FDA prepares to ban caffeinated energy drinks, the manufacturers of Four Loko say they will reformulate their drink without the caffeine. Thomas Gould, professor of psychology and neuroscience at Temple, says that would probably make the drink a bit safer: "It takes your body a while to figure out how much alcohol's in there, so if you’re consuming a lot quickly it's easier to get at a toxic level quicker." He says that when alcohol is combined with caffeine, people tend to consume more of it.

When you have a lot of weight to lose, it can be hard to work out. Not only is it physically uncomfortable, but there are often emotional challenges. Researchers at Temple's Center for Obesity Research and Education studied data from 278 obese and normal-weight women, and found that the obese women were more likely to say they were self-conscious, afraid of injury, daunted by the effort, and to report minor aches and pains. And they were less likely to be exercising a year later.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration sent warning letters Wednesday to the manufacturers of alcoholic energy drinks telling them it is illegal to produce the beverages, and is likely to banish them from store shelves nationwide. Robert McNamara, chair of Emergency Medicine at Temple's School of Medicine, was glad to hear of the FDA's action. "We've seen a lot of students, younger people, use the product and get into trouble."

For some patients, chemotherapy can cause short-term memory woes. Ellen Walker of Temple's School of Pharmacy studies the phenomenon, which she calls "chemo-brain." She and her colleagues received a grant from the National Cancer Institute to research the effects that chemotherapy has on neurons in the brain. "I talked to professionals — they had to give up their jobs," she said, recalling conversations with doctors and an administrator who couldn't remember things after having chemotherapy.

The Philadelphia Eagles' Lincoln Financial Field, built before the advent of seriously green construction, is soon to become the greenest stadium in the world. Next September, if all goes as planned, the stadium will have 100 wind turbines and 2,500 solar panels. The anticipated $60 million savings over 20 years may not sound like a lot. But it's nothing to be sniffed at, either. "It's not just do-good environmentalism," said Temple's Michael Leeds, who specializes in sports economics.
