In the two years since the Deepwater Horizon oil well pilled 206 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, two Temple researchers have been working to better understand the impact on both marine life and the environment. Temple biologist Erik Cordes is part of a group of scientists who have been studying the spill’s impact on deepwater coral communities in the Gulf, while Temple environmental engineer Michel Boufadel has been working with officials to assess the oil’s impact on beaches and wetlands.

Two years later, Gulf oil spill's impact remains

Media Outlet:

Philadelphia Inquirer

Two years after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, its impact is still being felt. Temple biologist Erik Cordes is part of a group of scientists who have long been studying the Gulf's coral communities and have now seen the spill's damage firsthand. They discovered a coral community about seven miles from the well that had come in contact with the spilled crude. "We could see that everywhere they had been covered, the tissue was either gone or completely degraded," said Cordes.
