Stadium security both high-tech and old-fashioned

KYW News Radio

If fans get unruly at tonight’s Flyers playoff game, what can be done? Aubrey Kent, associate professor at Temple, says security measures at sports venues have changed, especially since 9/11. “In the past, if you were precluded from bringing things in, it was mostly viewed as profit protection — they wanted you to buy your drinks in the stadium. A new generation of black studies students advance the field

Media Outlet:

Chronicle of Higher Education

The first Ph.D. program in black studies did not emerge until 1988, at Temple University, even though the field of black studies was born two decades earlier. After Temple established its Ph.D. program, which drew attention because of its director, Molefi Asanti, and because of its Afrocentric approach, the range of Ph.D. offerings expanded in the late 1990s at other institutions.

Dick Clark put city on map

Associated Press

Dick Clark may have worked in bigger cities over the course of his long career, but it was his time in Philadelphia that made him a household name. And though he later moved to Los Angeles, Clark never forgot his roots here, said Lew Klein, an early executive producer of the show. Philadelphia boasts troves of Clark and “Bandstand” related memorabilia. Klein just last week donated his papers to Temple Libraries, a collection that includes early pictures and videos of “Bandstand.”

Temple to honor Larry Magid

Media Outlet:

Philadelphia Inquirer

Philly native and Electric Factory Concerts co-founder Larry Magid will be awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters degree from his alma mater Temple University during its 125th Commencement Ceremony. He’s “surprised and humbled, but extremely honored. My career started 50 years ago this month as a student at Temple, booking bands for fraternity parties and many other things. It’s amazing to me that the things you learn in school you keep applying to your life. It never ends.”
