Philadelphia has the highest obesity rate of America's big cities. It also has an ambitious plan to turn 632 corner stores into greengrocers. But whether that will have a health impact remains to be seen. Temple's Center for Obesity Research (CORE) is working with the city to study how shopping habits change when healthy options are introduced. "I don't think we know much about how well this works," says CORE Director Gary Foster. "It's a field in its infancy…nobody has really done it at such a big scale."

Ninety-six pieces of transparent film lined windows at Temple this past spring, each donning an illustration designed to make the glass more visible to birds. A new study finds that of high school graduates who are not in college or do not have a college degree, just 27 percent are employed full-time. "The market has been discriminating against those with high school degrees or less," said Temple sociologist David Elesh. For generations, high school graduates found work in manufacturing and construction. But manufacturing has long been diminished, and the recession "torpedoed" construction, Elesh said.

Some interns will get more out of their internships and that will have a lot to do with what they put into it. “It is very important to be professional, that includes being on time all of the time, knowing the dress code and dressing appropriately,” said Rachel Brown, director of Temple’s Career Center. She also tries to get students beyond the basics, to prove their worth to an organization.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation warns that Joe Frazier’s gym may not be able to hold out much longer. The gym's precarious condition came to the attention of the Trust after a group of Temple students was assigned to prepare mock nominations of endangered buildings by instructor Dennis Playdon. The students, led by Ann Dinh and Michael Baker, became so interested in the gym that they turned the assignment into a real project.
