Temple's Wlezien: Convention speeches set tone for campaign's homestretch

What matters most in the campaign's final 100 days are their convention speeches, says Temple political scientist Christopher Wlezien. The speeches give voters a first look at a challenger who isn't familiar and a second look at a president who is. "It gets voters to take stock," he says. "Do I want to stay the course? Do I want a change?" The candidates' standings after the conventions have proved to be a reasonably reliable indicator of who will win, he said.

The commercialization of university research has long been touted as a possible economic driver for the state and the region. In the just-ended fiscal year, Temple received nearly $2.5 million from 24 licensing agreements. That’s more than double its licensing income in fiscal 2011. “We are probably in a position to greatly exceed the number of deals executed in the year just ended,” said Stephen Nappi, Temple’s director of technology development and commercialization.

Nuts may get a bad rap as being high in fat, but a new study suggests that people trying to maintain a healthy weight can still eat them without sacrificing poundage — and get a cholesterol benefit, to boot. "Compared to a group that didn't consume any nuts, those (who ate) almonds were able to lose comparable amounts of weight at six months and 18 months," said study researcher Gary Foster, director of Temple's Center for Obesity Research and Education.

Children don't play outside on the streets like they used to. Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, professor of psychology at Temple, terms the recently declining numbers of children who play as "the next global warming." "If we take play away from young children and fill all their time with directives, then 20 years from now, we're going to see exactly the crisis that we're starting to see today, which is a workforce woefully unprepared to operate in the global marketplace,” she said.

KYW News Radio

The NCAA punishment for Penn State includes millions of dollars and other severe sanctions. Some pundits had suggested a so-called death penalty. Jeremy Jordan, director of Temple's Sports Industry Research Center, feels that would have been too harsh. "I think that it's important for the University fabric and probably part of their ability to heal…to not just say we can't have football but let’s have football and do it a different way."
