Now in its sixth year, the Hoot Squad program has built a reputation for successfully helping students adapt to life at Temple during Welcome Week. The upperclass students volunteer to assist new students moving in to the residence halls and to introduce them to campus life.

Temple's Joe Schwartz points to flaws in conservative's admiration of Rand

Republican vice presidential pick Paul Ryan is the latest in a string of (usually conservative) politicians, pundits and entrepreneurs who have acknowledged a debt to novelist Ayn Rand. "What is attractive to conservative elites about Rand is that she gives them permission to gut social welfare, including popular programs like Medicare and Social Security," said Temple political scientist Joseph Schwartz. Ironically, Rand would deplore many conservatives today because they support corporate tax breaks and offer tax incentives to attract new businesses, he said.

At Temple, athletic trainers closely monitor football players

As tragic concussion and dehydration cases have raised the profile of those conditions, Temple University athletic trainers have made a priority of tending bumped heads and nagging football players to drink water. Before each practice, head trainer Dwight Stansbury along with three other full-time trainers and seven students soothe the previous day's sprains, strains and bruises in 105 players. "In athletics, especially in football, everybody's looking for a way to keep their kids healthy," he said.

Temple medical researcher awarded $4.4 million in naval research funding

Marla Wolfson, a professor of physiology, pediatrics and medicine at Temple University School of Medicine, was awarded a pair of grants, totaling $4.4 million, from the Office of Naval Research. One is to study a group of chemicals' ability to protect lungs in high altitudes and the other is to look at whether the same chemicals can lessen the impact of traumatic brain injuries.

According to a study led by Temple Fox School of Business Accounting Professor Steven Balsam, when CFOs manage earnings and expectations so that their firm’s results meet or slightly beat analysts’ targets, they receive about 40 percent more in bonus pay than they do when their company falls short of the mark.

Why seizing Assange could break international law

The British government could find itself hauled before an international court if it moves in on the Ecuadorian embassy where WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been granted political asylum. "It's pretty simple under international law," said Temple international law professor Peter Spiro. A look at weight loss and the role of nuts

For low calorie dieters-nuts are often forbidden. A new study found otherwise. “This study says—a calorie is a calorie. You can still eat almonds and lose weight,” explained Gary Foster, director of Temple’s Center for Obesity Research and Education. We also found that with comparable amounts of weight loss, the group that ate almonds also showed improved cholesterol and tryglycerides,” he said.
