With suicides and accidental deaths outnumbering combat-related deaths among the military, could a soldier's thrill-seeking personality be a factor? Frank Farley of Temple's College of Education believes it's unlikely. "We might normally expect high suicide rates in the military, given the often high levels of stress, anxiety, transitions, uncertainty and threat, economic and career issues, personal loss, (and) isolation and separation from loved ones, family and friends," wrote Farley, who has studied risk-taking personalities.

With their outcomes scripted before they begin, are party conventions outdated spectacles? Contrary to popular belief, conventions can sway voters, argued Temple political scientist Christopher Wlezien in an op-ed co-authored by Robert Erikson of Columbia University. "Changes in the polls during or between the conventions can be fleeting," wrote Wlezien and Erikson, co-authors of The Timeline of Presidential Elections. "But wait a few weeks after the conventions and the change is likely to be rather permanent over the autumn campaign."
