Huffington Post

For a new study, Katherine Bauer, a professor of public health at Temple, examined fast food menus over the past decade. The dessert sections hadn't gotten much bigger, but the calorie counts had risen dramatically. "It's really the only category where we saw over a 50 calorie increase," Bauer said. NHL lockout: Temple expert expects no ‘seismic’ shift any time soon

The Canadian Press

It’s a good thing federal mediators aren’t seeking to determine right and wrong in the NHL lockout. According to Aubrey Kent of Temple's School of Tourism and Hospitality Management, both sides have a valid claim that they are in the right. “Players feel as though they’re being bullied,” he said. “Owners feel from a dollar-value perspective that the next seven years they’ve offered would be far more lucrative than the previous seven years were, even as good as that was."

Timing is key in NHL negotiation

Federal mediators swooped into a meeting between the NHL and the players' union Wednesday and tried to steer the sides to a collective bargaining agreement. Joseph Folger, a Temple College of Education professor who teaches courses in conflict and mediation, said mediators can be helpful. "It's all about the timing," he said. "If both sides are at a place where they realize the alternative is much worse than compromising," then a deal will get done.”

Despite more healthy options, fast food still calorie heavy

Media Outlet:

HealthDay, U.S. News & World Report

A new study shows that providing more menu options on a fast-food menu doesn't mean the average diner chows down fewer calories. Part of the problem is that some of the highest-calorie foods are masquerading as healthy, said lead author Katherine Bauer, a researcher at Temple’s Center for Obesity Research and Education and an assistant professor of public health. "Entree salads, which are increasing in number, can be bad, too. With fried chicken on top and regular dressing, they can have more calories than a burger."
