Two Temple-commissioned orchestral works earn GRAMMY nominations

Two major pieces of orchestral music performed and recorded by the Temple University Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Professor Luis Biava have been nominated for a 2013 GRAMMY Award. "Music of Ansel Adams: America" and "Overture, Waltz and Rondo," both nominated in the "Best Instrumental Composition" category, were commissioned by Temple's Boyer College of Music and Dance, recorded at the Temple Performing Arts Center and released on Boyer's record label, BCM&D records.

University mourns the passing of Temple Trustee Joan Ballots

Joan Ballots, a Temple trustee, alumnus, donor and enthusiastic basketball fan, passed away yesterday after a long illness. Ballots, whose devotion to Temple was matched by her support for both the academic and athletic programs, has been a member of the Temple Board of Trustees since 1995. She served on numerous committees, including the searches for former presidents David Adamany and Ann Weaver Hart.

Temple welcomes more than 55 new world-class senior faculty

The latest wave of tenured and tenure-track recruits — more than 55 for 2012-13 — brings the total number of senior faculty members hired by Temple since 2004-05 to nearly 520, the biggest influx in the university's history.

New Manual For Diagnosing Mental Disorders Gets Stamp Of Approval

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has completed a decade-long process and approved changes to its diagnostic manual. The goal for the DSM-5 is to make the process as scientifically valid as possible but Temple professor Frank Farley says even though it’s an improvement, it’s not completely successful. “Significant decisions are made about people in the courts, in the mental health system and with insurers so we want it to be absolutely impeccable ... some of these (changes) are not particularly solid science.”

Fast Food 'Healthy Options' Don't Mean Fewer Calories

Healthy items on fast food menus can be anything but. And now, a new study has confirmed that observation: although menus grew between 1996 and 2010 to include 53 percent more items, the average number of calories in each item hasn't changed significantly. "Entree salads, which are increasing in number, can be bad, too. With fried chicken on top and regular dressing, they can have more calories than a burger," said lead researcher Katherine Bauer, a researcher at Temple’s Center for Obesity Research and Education.
