On Monday, Temple President-elect Neil Theobald received the President's Medal for Excellence from Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie. The highest honor an IU president can bestow, the award recognizes distinction in public service, service to the university and extraordinary merit and achievement in the arts, humanities, sciences, education and industry. Theobald will officially begin as Temple president on Jan. 1.

Grant helps students develop computer apps

Temple research shows promise in treating deadly form of cancer

Gleevec is the drug of choice for Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (or CML) but it doesn’t kill stem cells, leaving some patients at risk for the disease to get worse or relapse, according to Tomasz Skorski, professor of microbiology and immunology at Temple’s School of Medicine. He has found a protein that targets those stem cells in mice. “We think our strategy will be able to eliminate these Gleevec-resistant leukemia cells and eventually cure CML,” he said.

Temple orchestra receives two Grammy nominations

Last week, the Temple University Symphony Orchestra learned that a classical piece written by jazz legend Dave Brubeck on commission for Temple was nominated for a Grammy. At the same time, a piece composed by former faculty member Bill Cunliffe and recorded by the orchestra was also nominated for a Grammy. Both recordings were released on Temple's own music label. "For a nonprofit educational program, to receive this recognition is a really great outcome of the dedication of our faculty, students, and staff," said Robert Stroker, vice provost of the arts at Temple.

Researchers dig into Hurricane Sandy’s geological legacy

On Friday, Temple earth and environmental science faculty and graduate students explored areas along a New Jersey beachfront to uncover the geological signature of Superstorm Sandy recorded in the layers of sand. The researchers examined washovers and other geological features for deposits of light and heavy minerals in the sand as evidence of the wave surges that caused so much destruction.

Multicultural crafts bazaar puts books within reach for scholarship winners

Now in its third year, the Temple University Women of Color Multicultural Bazaar brings local vendors to the Howard Gittis Student Center to market scarves, jewelry, totes and other crafts to students and faculty. Proceeds from table rentals support a book scholarship fund that helps selected Temple female students of color purchase books and supplies.
