Wlezien's new book named to top ten list

A new book co-authored by Temple political scientist Christopher Wlezien was named a top ten best political book of 2012 by New Yorker magazine. The Timeline of Presidential Elections: How Campaigns Do (and Do Not) Matter is described as "a deeply wonky review by two political scientists of what kinds of events actually seem to change voter preferences during a Presidential campaign.... Every political pundit should be required to read this book before covering the 2016 campaign."

Temple commissions get Grammy nominations

The Temple University Symphony Orchestra performed a piece by Dave Brubeck and his son Chris at Lincoln Center in 2010. It was one of two pieces Temple commissioned that were recently nominated for Grammy Awards. “This is icing on the cake for us," said Robert Stroker, Temple vice provost for the arts. "I'm thrilled for the kids and the faculty, and for Temple. It's a real outcome measure of them being successful. They worked really hard."

Annual party makes holidays special for some extraordinary kids

On Dec. 15, the Temple Intergenerational Center held a holiday party for children participating in the Family Friends and Grandma’s Kids programs. Both programs offer support for families led by someone other than the children's biological parents.

Provost announces administrative changes in the Registrar's Office

Wendy Kutchner, university registrar, will depart Temple for Florida Atlantic University to assume her new role as assistant vice president of enrollment management and university registrar. Kim Buckwalter will become interim registrar effective Jan. 2, 2013.

Matt Rhule named new head football coach

During a Dec. 17 press conference, Temple Athletics Director Bill Bradshaw officially introduced Matt Rhule as the Owls' new head football coach. Rhule, who has 15 seasons of coaching experience, is returning to Temple after serving as assistant offensive line coach with the NFL's New York Giants. He has served as an assistant coach at Temple from 2006-2011.

Game on! Tyler students sweep prestigious design competition

Winning game designs on display at Philadelphia Museum of Art

Tyler School of Art students swept top honors at 20th Annual Collab Student Design Competition, held in conjunction with the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Their challenge: Either redesign and repackage an existing, iconic game or design a game of their own. The winners earned cash, got to interact with the judges (all industry leaders), met celebrated Tyler Graphic and Interactive Design alumna Paula Scher and got to have their work displayed at the museum's Perelman Building (through April 14, 2013).

Winter Break facilities and operations schedule

The university will close at the end of business on Friday, Dec. 21 and reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013. A limited number of services and offices will remain open during the break.

Buying bonds must now be done online

Buying a bond used to involve visiting the bank, but now you have to buy bonds on the U.S. Treasury Department's website. Some have complained that the process is cumbersome. "It is true that some people may be disadvantaged in the short-term, but in the long-term most people, especially the seniors, will figure out a way to use the Internet," said Sunil Wattal, an assistant professor in the Department of Management Information Systems at Temple's Fox School of Business.

TUJ faculty op-ed tackles regulation of the British press

In an op-ed in Japan's largest English-language newspaper, political scientist Tina Burrett of Temple University, Japan Campus, tackled Lord Justice Leveson's report into the culture, practices and ethics of the British press. "Applying regulation only to the mainstream media makes no sense," wrote Burrett. "Bloggers and tweeters can be just as powerful and damaging to reputations as the press can be. If newspapers won't supply us with a diet of gossip and paparazzi photos, then the Web will. As long as there is demand for gutter journalism, there will be a supply.

Temple doc coordinates relief project for Ethiopian school

Elias Siraj, director of clinical endocrinology at Temple University Hospital, was out for a walk when he noticed that a high school in Upper Dublin was being demolished. Siraj, the coordinator of a relief project for a school in Adwa, Ethiopia, didn't want the supplies inside to go to waste, so he worked with the school district and Boeing to send outdated computers, TVs, projectors, VCRs and thousands of textbooks to the school in Africa. "It took a year-and-a-half to accomplish," he said.
