In the latest installment of the Temple Made student profile series, meet Denise Racquel Smith, a 31-year-old horticulture major with a passion for plants. She has overseen the planting of native trees in Fairmount Park, helped build shade houses at Temple Ambler, worked to restore a meadow in Elkins Park, studied the Philadelphia region's lichens and held botanical samples collected by Lewis and Clark.

Signs that you’re too sick to go to work

Deciding that you are too sick to work is hard. You could tough it out, but you don’t want to expose your co-workers. The problem is that most of us are wrong about when to stay home, said Thomas Fekete, chief of infectious diseases at Temple. “The most contagious period is at the beginning, before you get really sick.” So, if you go to bed feeling slightly sick, and wake up feeling a bit under the weather, that’s the day to stay home. The following days, when you feel sicker, are days when you are less likely to share your contagious illness.

Has dating always been as confusing as it is in the 21st Century? Temple historian Beth Bailey, an expert on gender and courtship, provided historical context. "Advice literature on dating goes back a long way, and it often was dependent on the technology available. In the 19th Century we see a lot of advice pamphlets on proper letter writing and then later we see advice for how to behave on the phone," Bailey said.

Pope's retirement is a reminder for succession planning

"Succession planning is an art and science, and if you don't have an agenda and a timetable, it can be mayhem," said Steven N. Pyser, assistant professor of human resource management at Temple's Fox School of Business.

Praise the action to raise problem-solvers, researchers say

Praising toddlers for their efforts, rather than for being who they are, helped make them problem-solvers who think success results from hard work according to a new study. "This suggests that improving the quality of parents' praise in the toddler years may help children develop the belief that people can change and that challenging tasks provide opportunities to learn," said lead author, Elizabeth Gunderson, assistant professor of psychology at Temple.

'Temple Update' launches daily Spanish-language news brief

Temple University Television (TUTV) has launched a new Spanish-language news update to supplement the School of Media and Communication's weekly student newscast, “Temple Update.” “Update Ahora” and its English-language counterpart, "Update Now," air on TUTV six times a day from Monday through Thursday. The show is anchored by junior media studies and production major Janelle Roedán.

Temple physicians named to Best Doctors in America list

Eighty-three Temple physicians have been named to the 2013 Best Doctors in America list, compiled and published by Best Doctors, Inc. Temple physicians on this year's list practice at Temple University Hospital, Temple University Hospital-Episcopal Campus, Jeanes Hospital and Fox Chase Cancer Center. Only five percent of doctors in America earn a spot on the prestigious list.

Temple Owls to hold whiteout game against VCU

It’s almost that time of year again. Temple’s annual “Whiteout” game will be the Owls’ regular-season finale against Virginia Commonwealth on March 10 at the Liacouras Center. Temple defeated Xavier, 85-72, last season in a game where white t-shirts with cherry “I Believe” lettering and matching rally towels were given out to fans.
