Temple alumnus wins Oscar for film editing

Veteran film editor and Temple alumnus William Goldenberg won an Academy Award for "Best Film Editing" from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at the 85th annual Academy Awards ceremony Sunday at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. Goldenberg was also nominated for "Zero Dark Thirty." The two films were his third and fourth Academy Award nominations.

Renowned poet, author Ishmael Reed to read from his works

In honor of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 50th anniversary of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s March on Washington, Temple's English Department is hosting a reading by poet, essayist, playwright and novelist Ishmael Reed. Reed is known for representing neglected African and African-American perspectives and highlighting all underrepresented peoples and perspectives in his work.

Has coal company broken pension promises?

Patriot Coal is seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy, through which it will seek to limit or discharge pension and health obligations to 22,000 retired miners. Bruce Rader of Temple's Fox School of Business argues that allowing bankruptcy would "socialize the health care benefits since the miners’ ability to pay will not cover this obligation and then the health care burden will be shifted to the government. In essence we will all pay the costs."

Temple Law receives $1.5 million to open social justice center

Temple University’s Beasley School of Law has received $1.5 million to create a Center for Social Justice. The new clinic won't have a single mission, such as immigration or environmental law, as many clinics do. Instead, Dean JoAnne Epps says, the center's greater flexibility will allow it to partner with area organizations and work separately on a range of projects. "I'm hoping that we teach students how to bring about change through policy, through lobbying and sometimes through litigation," Epps said.

Temple works to ID kids in need of dental care

Temple is testing a new way to reach families who haven't gotten early dental care for their young children. With a $1.75 million donation from United Healthcare, Project Engage will enroll children who are under age 6 and have never seen a dentist. Amid Ismail, dean of Temple’s School of Dentistry, said those children are the ones at risk of waiting until an emergency to see a dentist.

At Temple, Twitter’s different role in the classroom

Jordan Shapiro's Temple class delved into a weighty discussion of Plato's allegory of the cave. On the classroom wall flashed a series of posts on Twitter. While many professors ban tweeting in class, Shapiro encourages it. In fact, he was very happy when a student texted with a friend about the class discussion. "Socializing about Plato? Is there a better thing? That's how they're using their phones," Shapiro said. "I felt completely validated."

Next time you're near Temple University's Ambler campus, stop by and visit the original, and newly refurbished, library that honors the 2011 centennial of the Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women that started here. This spring, a new garden will be installed just outside in honor of Jenny Rose Carey, Ambler's arboretum director. It'll be a thyme garden with a globe sundial.
