Temple administrator to be honored at White House

President Obama chose Temple’s Patience Lehrman for one of the country’s highest civilian honors. Lehrman, national director of Project SHINE, will receive the 2012 Presidential Citizens Medal in recognition of exemplary service to the country. She said this honor is a reflection of the value immigrants represent to the country. “Look at how we can come together, establish a common agenda for really engaging newcomers in our various neighborhoods, give them the skills and the support they need to become part of this society.”

Historian Heather Thompson serves as consultant for new film on Attica

A new documentary on the 1971 Attica prison riot raises doubts about whether a prominent inmate was accidentally killed in the retaking, as the official version of the uprising has long maintained. Heather Thompson, professor in Temple's Department of History and Department of African American Studies, is writing what likely will be the definitive history of the Attica uprising. Thompson worked closely with the filmmaker and is interviewed in the film.

TU Advisory: Fires at Morgan Hall construction site

A series of fires were set at the Morgan Hall construction site on February 11 and 12. The fires involved construction debris and were not serious. No one was injured and construction continues on the site as scheduled. Federal and city authorities are investigating the incidents, which have been limited to the work site and pose no threat to the Temple community.

Student investors make big gains in transition to real funds

Students who manage the William C. Dunkelberg Owl Fund — a hands-on approach to investment education at the Fox School of Business — have shifted from conducting mock trades to actual investing. Last semester, Owl Fund managers made 14 recommendations for investment, approving nine stock purchases and rejecting five. Six of their holdings have gained, and earnings from the fund will support a scholarship in real estate and finance named in honor of Jay Lamont, the longtime director of Temple’s Real Estate Institute.

Temple Ambler sets up indoor iceless ice skating rink

Temple University Ambler transformed the student lounge into a winter wonderland after an indoor iceless ice skating rink was installed. Students laced up real ice skates to try out the rink that requires no ice to build. Wanda Lewis-Campbell, assistant dean for student life, said the event was held as a way of welcoming back students who returned to campus after a long winter break.

TV drama captures public angst at "Made in Japan" decline

A Japanese electronics firm near bankruptcy, a ruthless Chinese rival and a laid-off engineer feature in a popular TV drama that is hitting a public nerve. "Japanese have great anxiety about the huge shift in power in East Asia to China on both the security and economic level," said Jeffrey Kingston, director of Asian Studies at Temple University, Japan campus. "The (TV) drama is a window into Japan's collective anxiety about its apparent economic decline."

Diet soda vs. water: Temple study compares for weight loss

There’s been plenty of conjecture that diet beverages hinder weight loss, but Temple is putting it to the test in a new study by comparing it with water. There should not be a difference between zero-calorie diet beverages and water, at least, academically. Gary Foster, director of Temple’s Center for Obesity Research and Education, suggests that the sweet flavors in some diet beverages may lead to further cravings of that sweet taste, which can cause diets to fall off track.

Temple’s Project Shine director to receive presidential medal

Patience Lehrman has come a long way from her native Cameroon. On Friday, the executive director of Project Shine, the national immigrant-integration project, based at Temple, will be among a score of citizens to receive medals from President Obama for distinguished public service in 2012. "Their selflessness and courage inspire us," the president said in announcing their selection from among 6,000 people nominated by public submissions.

Study examines deterrent effect of urban greening on crime
