The new cohort brings with it a remarkably broad range of expertise, joining 11 different schools and colleges, with the College of Science and Technology, College of Liberal Arts and School of Medicine leading the way.

TU Siren and TU Alert system will be tested Sept. 26

As part of TU Ready, Temple's Emergency Preparedness initiative, the Main Campus emergency TU Siren will be tested on Thursday, Sept. 26, beginning at noon. TU Siren and TU Alert are critical components of Temple's TU Ready emergency notification system, and regular testing of the system is essential to ensure effectiveness. Thursday's test will include two 3-minute siren activations and initiation of the TU Alert system. The TU Alert will include a voice and text message to all registered cell phones and email notification to all Temple accounts. Members of the Temple community are advised to confirm and update their contact information in Self-Service Banner to ensure receipt of TU Alert emergency notifications. Rolling Stone listing brings more national exposure to Temple’s Diamond Marching Band

Temple's Diamond Marching Band, “the Pride of the Cherry and White,” was featured Tuesday in Rolling Stone magazine's online list of the top "10 Mind-Blowing College Marching Band Cover Songs." The post includes a YouTube video clip of the band performing Kanye West's popular hit "All of the Lights" and describes the performance as "a version loud enough to fill a stadium." The listing is the latest in a string of high-profile exposures for the band, which performed last week on the set of ABC's "Good Morning America" and was recently featured on the website of popular music artists Fall Out Boy.

Robot opera results from art and science collaboration

An unconventional collaboration between Boyer music professor Maurice Wright and computer sciences professor Rolf Lakaemper has yielded a new form of opera that will be presented this weekend at the Conwell Dance Theater. Performed by three research robots, five singers and a chorus, "Galatea_Reset" tells the mythological story of sculptor Pygmalion, who falls in love with his creation, Galatea, only to have her brought to life for him by the Goddess Venus. The work was made possible through a grant from the Temple Commission on the Arts.

Lessons on American football help international students become part of the crowd

To help Temple's growing international student population get acclimated to their new home, the Office of International Admissions offered "Football 101," an hour-long tutorial designed to introduce new students to the rules the game and increase international student participation in sports-related activities. Members of the Owls' football staff, including Head Coach Matt Rhule, offered hands-on instruction at the Edberg-Olson practice facility.

New academic calendar adds Fall Break, standardized features

Several changes are planned for the academic calendar beginning in the fall of 2014. Changes include a new Fall Break around Thanksgiving, moving Commencement from Thursdays to Fridays to accommodate out-of-town visitors and standardizing the beginning and end of each semester.

SMC scholarship will honor late radio legend

The School of Media and Communication has established a scholarship honoring radio legend E. Steven Collins, director of urban marketing and external relations at Radio One and host of the weekly show, “Philly Speaks,” who died suddently on Sept. 9. Collins was to return to campus Oct. 17 to receive a 2013 Lew Klein Alumni in the Media award. His life and work will be honored during the ceremony, at which he will be inducted into the SMC Hall of Fame.

Mother-daughter duo earns Fox business degrees

Deborah Donato and her daughter, Caitlin, both received undergraduate degrees from Temple at a Fox School of Business graduation ceremony last Thursday. Both mother and daughter carried transfer credits to Temple and finished their degrees in three years by taking summer courses. Deborah left a 30-year career in the medical field to pursue her degree full-time, which allowed her to attend school at the same time as her daughter. She recently accepted a position as an administrative coordinator in Fox's Human Resource Management Department.

Cable news is not polarizing America, says Temple political scientist in new book

At a time when ideologically-based news options on cable television are proliferating, many are concerned that such programming may be polarizing American voters. But, in his new book Changing Minds or Changing Channels: Partisan News in an Age of Choice, Temple political scientist Kevin Arceneaux shows that partisan news is not polarizing America. Instead, the most troubling consequence of the ever-expanding media environment is that it has allowed people to tune out the news entirely.

Owls take Manhattan: Temple band, fans, pride appear on 'Good Morning America'
