Inspired to make a change after the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, 23-year-old Brian Linton, a Temple graduate and entrepreneur, launched United by Blue. The company sells organic apparel and accessories and removes one pound of trash from oceans, beaches and waterways for each product it sells. In 2008, Linton won the Be Your Own Boss Bowl, sponsored by Temple's Innovation and Entrepreneurship Institute, with a plan for an organic coffee shop. "What really pushed him over the top was he answered the judges' questions so well," said Jaine Lucas, the institute's executive director. "They could see in a heartbeat that he knew his stuff, had done all his research."
