In 1970, “Silent Sentinel,” a statue of a Civil War soldier that once stood guard at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Yeadon, was pulled it from its granite base by thieves. After decades in hiding, the restored statue is being moved to Philadelphia’s Laurel Hill Cemetery. In its new location, the statue “will add a new dimension to the Civil War and arts collection of the city," said Andy Waskie, a Temple instructor and author of Philadelphia and the Civil War: Arsenal of the Union. The bronze will eventually be illuminated at night "like an eternal flame in Philadelphia, honoring all veterans," he said.
