Food and history are intertwined in this re-discovery of Fred Harvey, the 19th century restaurateur who paved the way for westward expansion one meal at a time. Hollywood had a long love affair with Harvey, as illustrated by the hit movie The Harvey Girls. John Johnson, professor of music theory at Temple University, discussed how the music in the movie contributed to its popularity. Of the movie’s signature song, Johnson said, “It’s a charming song. The story goes that the director, George Sydney, said he wanted a train song. All of the effects of the train are there in the song…even the whistle.”
