Earlier this year, Temple's Boyer College of Music and Dance commissioned one of its former professors, Bill Cunliffe, to write a piece that could be played by both the Temple University Symphony Orchestra and Temple University Jazz Band. Cunliffe decided to add Latin music to the mix, resulting in an 18-minute movement called "fourth stream...La Banda," which has been nominated for a Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition. "The Latin eighth-note feel is similar to a classical feel," said Cunliffe. "I always feel that classical and Latin are a better fit, because of the rhythmic unity."
