To the Temple community, 

Earlier this spring, I wrote to share the news that Temple University had received a record number of undergraduate applications. As we continue to recruit the Class of 2028, I am pleased to share additional positive news. 

As of June 10, we have received more than 5,600 undergraduate deposits from first-year admitted students. This is up 29% from the total number of deposits that the university received last year. 

As was the case when we received record applications, this encouraging enrollment news is the direct result of the work and persistence of many people, including Vice Provost for Enrollment Management Jose Aviles and his team, who have been willing to try new approaches and think outside the box. Colleagues across the university—across every school and college—have been willing to roll up their sleeves and accomplish the hard work of meeting prospective students where they are. In recent months, I have been one of many who has said that the Temple community is at its strongest when it comes together, and this significant rise in undergraduate deposits serves as the latest evidence of just that. 

We know that not every student who has deposited will ultimately matriculate. We must work to ensure that our new students are supported through the onboarding process and set up on a path to success. I would like to share just a few highlights that help paint a picture of what the Class of 2028 might look like when students arrive on campus this fall. 

• Following a trend we have seen in recent years, we are again on track for continued international growth. Deposits from international students are up 64% versus last year. 
• Deposits from Philadelphia residents are up 59%. 
• Deposits from out-of-state students are up 41% compared to last year.  
• Total deposits from the state of Pennsylvania are up 20%. 
• Deposits from students of color are strong overall. Deposits from Black students are up 70% while deposits from Hispanic/Latinx students are up 31% compared to last year. Currently, students of color make up 61% of all deposits, compared to a then-record 57% last year. 
• The academic credentials of the deposited class have also increased as measured by high school GPA. 
• Temple’s acceptance rate has also slightly decreased by two percentage points. 

There is still work to be done. Over the next several weeks, the Division of Enrollment Management and departments across the university must continue to work diligently to make the pathway to Temple seamless. 

Based on the work we’ve seen from our colleagues across the university this year, I have no doubt that we will work together to rise to the challenge again.
