'Super Luke' spearheads crusade to grow Temple sports fandom

Temple Today Email Information
Luke Butler liked Temple so much that he sent in his deposit before he even heard back from other colleges, and almost everything he experienced as a freshman validated his decision. He liked being in the heart of Philadelphia. He liked the intimacy of the Honors Program. He liked his psychology and neuroscience courses. And, being a huge sports fan, he really liked going to watch Temple football and basketball games. But that's where he saw something he didn't like. When Luke walked into Lincoln Financial Field or the Liacouras Center, he didn't see thousands of fellow students, screaming their support of their school. So he decided to do something about it. He became a leader of the Cherry Crusade, a group of rabid student supporters. And on September 9, 2008, he painted his body cherry red, put on a cape and became "Super Luke."

Commitment to peace leads Cuddy to exploration of urban violence

Temple Today Email Information
Max Cuddy’s four years at Temple, along with his plans for the future, are unified under a common theme: a commitment to peace and dialogue. Cuddy’s philosophy is a reaction to the story of his great grandmother, who was the only member of her family to survive the Armenian genocide of 1915. “We think her brothers were killed,” he said. “We could rarely get her to discuss it.” As a result, Cuddy has made it his goal to connect communities that look at each other across a divide. That commitment has been exemplified at every point in his Temple career.

The real world: Grads transformed by off-campus experiences

Temple Today Email Information
While historians may look back on the 5,582 Temple undergraduate students who officially graduate this academic year as the largest class in the university's history, the Class of 2010 would rather you remember them for a different reason — and it relates to accomplishments that didn't even happen on campus. More than any other group of Temple grads before them, the Class of 2010 refused to be defined solely by their achievements in the classroom. Taking advantage of new study abroad, service immersion and community-based learning programs, a record number of students had transformative out-of-the-classroom experiences. More of them spent a summer, a semester or even a whole year studying overseas than ever before. And more of them worked to make a difference in underserved communities, both abroad and in Temple's backyard. For many graduating seniors, these active learning opportunities have shaped career choices and made them more attractive to prospective employers — just in time to help them cope with a tough job market.
