After 26 years in the pharmaceutical industry, Magid Abou-Gharbia has moved to academia as director of the Moulder Center for Drug Discovery Research in Temple's School of Pharmacy. For Abou-Gharbia, who had a long and prosperous career in industry, the idea of returning to academia had been percolating since graduate school. "Researchers learn a lot from the literature, and I felt an obligation to give back to the literature and educate future generations," he says.

A Washington Post review of "Sanctified" — with music by Rollo Dilworth, associate professor at Temple's Boyer College of Music — described the musical comedy as "witty" and "enjoyable." The production chronicles the struggle of a cash-strapped African-American church to mount a hymn-belting revival. "Sanctified" runs through Nov. 14 at the Lincoln Theater.

Does Fairmount have "Whitewheen," a separate Halloween for white kids? According to Temple sociologist Sherri Grasmuck, Fairmount was once a racially-charged neighborhood. She conducted field research in the neighborhood for a 2005 book on class and race in boys' baseball. "Yes, Whiteween exists, or existed historically," Grasmuck said. "People talk about it, but it's a complicated kind of thing. I don't know whether it's still going on right now. I don't know if people use that phrase."
