Police officials announced that a transgender prostitute has been charged with beating and strangling a man in Philadelphia's Omni Hotel. Prosecuting prostitutes — even those involved in violent encounters — often proves to be difficult, noted Temple criminologist Jerry Ratcliffe. "People who are victimized don't report anything to police because of shame and fear — fear of arrest, and fear that their activities will become known to friends and family," he said.

The rise of China as an economic power is fueling emergent nationalism in Japan. "It's about the huge shift of power from Japan toward China over the last 15 years," said Jeff Kingston of Temple University, Japan Campus. "It's about who gets to call the shots in Asia — the U.S. or China, and China is saying it wants a bigger say and the key issue is for the U.S. to decide if it wants to cede more space to them — and history is not littered with good examples of that."

Election Day has made Pennsylvania into more of a red state. Will it be more difficult for Philadelphia to get its fair share of state tax dollars? The director of Temple's Institute for Public Affairs, Joseph McLaughlin, says if the city and regional delegations to Harrisburg can unite around some priorities, they can be successful. "I think the business community here will be more important to the city in helping them get what they need from Harrisburg or avert things that they think are really bad," he said.

A survey of the seafloor near BP's blown-out well in the Gulf of Mexico has turned up dead and dying coral reefs that were probably damaged by the oil spill. Further study is needed to conclusively link the coral die-off to the spill. "There's a lot of work to be done to see if there's been some sublethal effect on these corals," said Erik Cordes, a marine biologist at Temple who has been studying reefs in the gulf in the aftermath of the spill.

Many people tend to eat more when they are stressed or upset. Often times so-called 'emotional eating' can lead to weight gain. That's why Temple is continuing its study on how to best help people overcome emotional eating. One technique includes having participants write down everything they eat, and their emotions at the time, in a food journal. "A lot of people do say that once they write it down, they start to see patterns that they didn't notice were there before," said Edie Goldbacher, the study's leader.
