Deseret News (Salt Lake City, Utah)

Spatial skills are predictive of success in mathematics, and parents can help their children develop spatial skills, says Temple psychology professor Nora Newcombe. She found that parents and children who play with blocks were more likely to use spatial terms like “over,” “around” and “through” than participants who play with pre-assembled toys. According to Newcombe, hearing and voicing such words together improves children's spatial awareness.

Philadelphia entrepreneur Jon Hauptman started an unusual business — holster making — in a most unorthodox way: He disclosed virtually all his trade secrets in YouTube videos. That his divulge-all strategy has led to sales success so far is not necessarily surprising, said Seok-Woo Kwon, an assistant professor at Temple's Fox School of Business. "By running a very transparent process and revealing almost a trade secret in a way, it's giving up something, but at the same time he's earning trust from potential customers," Kwon said.

Substituting almonds for less healthy foods could help dieters stick to a calorie-controlled diet, and lower their cholesterol at the same time, says a new study. "Nuts, and in this case almonds, shouldn't be on the ‘do not eat' list, they can be effectively incorporated in a weight loss plan, with the caveat that they have to be portion controlled," said Gary Foster, who led the study at Temple’s Center for Obesity Education and Research.

As any campaign consultant will tell you, it's hard for an incumbent president to win a second term when the unemployment rate is high. Broad economic growth, consumer confidence, inflation and industrial activity are also useful indicators. "These little pieces — little data points — don't matter a whole lot, but collectively they tell a story about the 'big E' — the economy," said Christopher Wlezien, a professor of political science at Temple.

Spain's protest movement grows

Media Outlet:

Reuters

A protest movement against the Spanish government's latest austerity measures swelled as public sector workers stepped up demonstrations in Madrid and around the country after more than a week of spontaneous action. Civil servants have been protesting without fail every day, organizing action through emails and by coordinating at work without any clear leaders. "You don't need much to prepare but they are still causing havoc. That has the government a little bit nervous," said Sandra Suarez, a political scientist at Temple.
