The spike in drownings in Canada among child under the age of five, as reported by the Lifesaving Society, is of much concern. These tragedies illustrate the common, but poorly understood, phenomenon of how drowning is a silent death for children. According to Joseph Torg, a faculty member at Temple’s School of Medicine, young children and toddlers jump into water and sink like a lead weight straight to the bottom. It happens quickly, silently and without notice.
Everyone born in a U.S. state or territory automatically gets U.S. citizenship —unless one happens to be born in American Samoa. That exception is at the heart of a federal lawsuit. Peter Spiro, a law professor at Temple, said the suit might run into problems. "There's a long, historical tradition of U.S. territories lying outside the reach of the 14th Amendment," he said. "It wouldn't be hard for Congress to fix this, and in my opinion, it probably should."
While Penn State officials failed in their duty to report allegations of child abuse, they also did not comply with the Clery Act. Jeanne Clery's murder 25 years ago on the campus of Lehigh University sparked a crusade to transform safety on college campuses. "Like every university we have a set of protocols that uses the Clery Act as a guideline to tell us how and when and where we need to be advising students to help keep them safe," said Ray Betzner, Temple's assistant vice president for communications.
In the past fiscal year, Temple University has received nearly $2.5 million — an all-time high — from 24 licensing agreements for technology developed by Temple researchers. That’s up from $1.2 million in licensing revenue from the fiscal year 2010-2011. The increase comes from support from firms like Benjamin Franklin Technology Partners and BioStrategy Partners who have invested $550,000 in Temple over the past year.
Five students and one professor from Temple's School of Media and Communication will travel to England to cover life in the city during the Olympics. "No matter what experience you are given, just jump on it because it's not going to happen again," said Ryan Geffert, a junior who is one of the five students selected, recalling advice he was given while preparing for the trip.
Temple has created a special task force to review in detail the Report of the Special Investigative Counsel ("the Freeh Report") of July 12, 2012 in order to identify potential implications for Temple and potential recommendations for action if warranted by its findings. The task force will make a final report on its findings and any recommendations to the chairman of the Board of Trustees, University Counsel and the acting president on September 15.
