Little league’s big headaches: helicopter coaches

“Helicopter parents,” who are obsessed with their children’s sports teams winning are now joining the coaching staffs for those teams, becoming “helicopter coaches.” Says Lois Butcher-Poffley, a Temple sports psychologist and a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee’s sports psychology registry, “This is a way for the helicopter parent to gain access where they were banned before.”

Urban farming company wins Temple competition

Neighborhood Foods, a West Philadelphia-based urban-farming business, won the grand prize at Temple University’s Be Your Own Boss Bowl last week. The company, which was founded by Dylan Baird, a graduate of Temple’s Fox School of Business, garnered more than $125,000 in cash, professional services and prizes.

New Temple president Neil Theobald has high hopes for the university

Temple’s new president Neil Theobald, recently hosted a barbecue for students. Among his top priorities are new plans for the  physical campus. “We’re really trying to visualize, not just building by building,” like the 20/20 plan, he said. That means more housing on campus, a more vibrant campus and more research labs.

Academic librarians want to be regarded not just as gatekeepers of information but as "gate openers," according to the association's president, Steven J. Bell, associate university librarian at Temple.
