Entering unfamiliar territory, Poland native builds family at Temple

A native of Poland, Katarzyna Tomasik chose Temple for its reputation for multiculturalism. But when she arrived on Main Campus, she felt like she had been plopped headfirst into unfamiliar territory. To connect with other international students, she joined Temple's International Student Association, and eventually became the group's president. Three years later, she has grown the organization from a handful of members to more than 130, with many more attending the association's popular events.

Pharmacy student makes time for research

But that didn’t stop Joel John, who will receive his Pharm.D. degree from Temple’s School of Pharmacy, from finding time to pursue independent research. John has spent the past four years examining the effects of drugs on learning and memory in the behavioral pharmacology lab of professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences Professor Ellen Walker.

Medicine grad discovered love of science on tour with his band

With one semester to go at West Chester University, Chris Kleinberg quit school to play electric guitar with his rock band, “Me without you.” But during seven years of touring and “living the dream,” he unexpectedly uncovered a deep love of science that would eventually lead him to medical school. This week, Kleinberg will graduate from Temple’s School of Medicine bound for a residency in emergency medicine at Temple University Hospital.

PECO scholarship program helps blaze trail for high potential students with financial challenges

The PECO Scholars Program awards $25,000 to students who demonstrate a high degree of academic achievement and leadership potential but who still have unmet financial need. In coordination with Temple’s Russell Conwell Center, the program has identified and awarded scholarships to 36 students since its inception three years ago.

Fuel mileage estimates are questioned

The EPA-created methodology for determining automobile fuel mileage has been questioned since tests are done by the automakers and not the EPA. Temple mechanical engineer Richard Cohen says standardization in conducting the tests is needed. “I can’t think of any other way to do it because, once you define the system, the auto companies can game it, and of course they can game this system somewhat as well,” said Cohen.

Governor Christie undergoes lapband surgery

Governor Christie secretly underwent weight-loss surgery in February, just days after joking about his weight with David Letterman. John Meilahn of Temple University Hospital, a surgeon who was not involved in the governor's care, says a silicone band is placed around the stomach and tightened every four to six weeks. How much weight someone loses can vary. "Typically, we will see 30-50% excess body weight. That means if you are 100 pounds overweight, you might lose 30-50 pounds of that weight," says Meilahn.

How does one exercise individuality on graduation day when awash in a sea of same-colored gowns? Temple photographer Betsy Manning has noticed over the years that students have worn extreme heels and colorful shoes as a way to exert their individuality. She plans to set up a “shoe cam” on commencement day to check out the styles. Manning will share the findings with the university community, via social media.
