Philadelphia’s campaign to market Center City public schools only increased the divide between the educational “haves” and “have nots.” In her book Marketing Schools, Marketing Cities, Temple urban education professor Maia Cucchiara says the effort effectively excluded poor families. “From the perspective of someone from North Philadelphia who’s trying to use a school like Greenfield to ‘escape’ the low-performing schools in their neighborhood, they lose access to those schools,” Cucchiara explains.

In recent years, the Inquirer’s restaurant critic Craig LaBan has acknowledged what the Temple community has known for decades: Philadelphia’s food truck culture deserves respect, and Temple is a hot spot of food truck excellence. In his latest big roundup of Philly food truck reviews, LaBan singled out Poi Dog (“homespun Hawaiian flavors”) and Cloud Coffee (“performance art”) for praise. After 42 years of enduring the best shots that age, urban decay and commercial evolution could deliver, Joe Frazier’s Gym earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places this week. Starting in 2011, Temple’s Dennis Playdon enlisted students in his “Introduction to Architectural Preservation” class to work on saving the gym. During the process, the Temple team developed newfound respect for the iconic Philadelphia boxer. “In talking to people, I really got the sense that Frazier was a neighborhood guy who touched everyone around there,” said Playdon.

Amy Goldberg, Temple Hospital’s chief of trauma and surgical critical care, stood in the emergency room and held up a blunt-looking metal tool so the 8th grade boys could see it. “We take an instrument like this, lift up on the breast bone and actually cut straight across it,” she explained. Goldberg’s description of the extraordinary steps she takes to save gunshot victims are part of “Cradle to Grave,” a program she created in 2006, after a spike in teen gun deaths, to show middle school students the true consequences of gun violence.

Research suggests marijuana's THC helps fight HIV

Long touted as a sure-fire cure for ambition, it seems marijuana can also help in the treatment of HIV. According to the results of a trial by Temple University researchers, synthetic cannabinoid compounds were shown to be effective in helping the body fight HIV infection. The compounds triggered a response in white blood cell receptors that repressed the virus and could also protect against complications associated with the illness.
