Früt Bar is a sweet addition to Pearson-McGonigle

Students sipped on free samples of smoothies and juice served up during the grand opening of the Früt Bar on Monday, Nov. 5.

Opened inside the newly renovated Pearson-McGonigle Hall, the new shop offers a variety of healthy options. The Früt Bar’s all-natural menu features smoothies and juice selections that are blended as you wait. Varieties include fruit and yogurt smoothies and “snackable smoothies” made from ingredients such as banana and peanut butter. You can also create your own from the Früt Bar’s list of fresh ingredients.

Other menu options include beverages such as soy milk, tea and coffee, and Grab N’ Go selections such as hummus packs and whole fruit. Sandwiches, wraps and salads are also available for those looking for more substantial fare.

Operated by University Dining Services by Sodexo, the Früt Bar will be open weekdays from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. and accepts meal plans, Diamond Dollars, cash and major credit cards. The shop will be open on evenings and weekends for women’s basketball games played in McGonigle Hall.

For many students, the ability to purchase healthy, tasty items in the campus recreation building is a welcome addition. Employees note that there has been a steady flow of students since the shop first opened on Monday, Oct. 22. Patrons have gravitated toward the classic strawberry-banana smoothie, but the “Big Green” — a combination of spinach, peanut butter, banana and soy milk — is a popular second.

Junior neuroscience major Cat Grubb, a work-study assistant at the rock climbing wall next door, said she is excited for the expanded dining options.

“With all the other renovations, the building was in need of a place to get refreshments,” she said.

The Früt Bar is the first of several retail establishments planned for Pearson-McGonigle’s newly renovated atrium overlooking North Broad Street. Completed this summer, the facility also includes renovated training and support spaces for Campus Recreation and NCAA sports, practice and training facilities for men’s and women’s basketball, four full basketball courts for students, a rock climbing wall and new academic and advising space.
