Rainy Spring Fling still a success

Temple University Spring Fling 2010

Despite less than ideal conditions, hundreds of students populated the heart of Main Campus yesterday to take part in this year’s Spring Fling celebrations. An annual outdoor event hosted by the Office of Student Activities, Spring Fling activities line major campus thoroughfares with tables, vendors, activities, music and more.

Although the weather was cooler and rainier than previous years, Spring Fling 2010, which was themed as “80’s vs. 90’s,” still was a success. A large stage on the west side of the Bell Tower featured several bands performing music that set the tone for the festivities.

Along Polett Walk, Liacouras Walk and 13th Street, student organizations and local businesses set up tables and activities to entertain passing students. Many sold food and beverages, and while the water ice mostly went untouched, the smell of grilled food enticed some students to grab a bite to eat.

Giveaways and games were also abundant — several student organizations offered passersby a chance to throw a pie at their members. A fully-padded hockey goalie guarded a net inside of Alumni Circle on Liacouras Walk, issuing challenges to students to try to get a shot past him.

A number of Temple organizations also used the opportunity to promote their causes. Booths included information on issues such as sustainability and how to access fresh produce, and several stands offered food or novelty items in exchange for donations to help the island nation of Haiti rebuild.
