Now the chemistry major is about to have her first scientific paper published with her name listed as the primary author, all because she was bold enough to walk into a professor's office and ask how she could get involved in hands-on research — with lasers.

In the latest "Faces of Temple" student profile, meet junior Anne Preston, an urban farmer who created a one-acre farm on a vacant lot in West Philadelphia that now employs two local residents, runs after-school programs and produces enough fresh vegetables to feed 50 families. Preston recently became the first Temple student to win two prestigious and competitive national scholarships — a Truman and a Udall.
