At issue in a contentious U.S. District Court hearing in Philadelphia: Does a local lawyer have to disclose his most private communications in a lawsuit, filed in Ecuador, against energy giant Chevron? "There is no international law requirement that a court in one country has to enforce a judgment from a court in [another] country," said Duncan Hollis, an international law expert at Temple's Beasley School of Law and a former State Department lawyer.

"The Philly Post" blog reported on research showing that regional "accents" are developing in the Twitterverse. Muffy Siegel, a linguist at Temple, says sites such as Twitter have given those who study language a treasure trove of information to sift through and analyze. "Social media have proved a bonanza to linguists, because it gives us access to people writing and speaking in a very natural way. From doctors to bartenders, there's no shortage of people offering advice about alcohol. What's fact and what's fiction? Recent research calls some conventional wisdom into question. For example, contrary to popular belief, drinking coffee will not get you sober faster. Following the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, many columnists and talk-show hosts have questioned the media's role in fostering a culture of violent rhetoric. Some commentators think the media has "celebrified" suspects, gunmen and terrorists. Many killers kill "to have their 15 minutes of fame," according to Christopher Harper, associate professor of journalism at Temple. They must be reported on, but the media have a way of turning them into celebrities.

Psychologists say Jared Loughner's parents must be experiencing devastating grief and perhaps guilt over the son's actions. But there is no roadmap for their experience, and only a few parents have stood in their shoes. "We run into this problem of generalizing from the available research to something that is so unique like this," said Temple psychologist Frank Farley. "The kind of stuff that gets published in the field of family psychology, most of it doesn't come close to being comparable to this."
