If your small business is on solid ground and you can afford it, now is an excellent time to hire, industry experts say. "Because labor costs are down and because there are a lot of unemployed people, the quality of applicants is better," said Bill Dunkelberg, chief economist for the National Federation of Independent Business and an economics professor at Temple. "The question you have to answer is: If I pay these people, will they bring in enough extra revenue to cover their costs?"

"Life is Tweet these days at Temple," wrote PBJ higher education reporter Peter Key. Temple was recently ranked the eighth most influential college on Twitter by Klout, a firm that measures influence on the social web. To come up with its ranking, Klout took into account such factors as the number of engaged followers each school's official Twitter feed has and how often the school's feed's tweets are retweeted. Temple's Twitter feed, run by the Office of University Communications, has added more than 1,000 followers in less than three months.

A survey of nearly 400 social workers shows that half agree cyber-bullying is a problem in the schools, but fewer than 20 percent say their school has an effective policy in place to tackle the issue. Jonathan Singer, assistant professor of social work at Temple and study co-author, says one of the problems is the attacks often occur after school hours: "There might be some school policy in place if the cyber-bullying affects a child's ability to learn regardless of when it happens then we have a responsibility to jump in."

Temple University has become the second area university in a little more than a month to receive a $1 million grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation to support a noncredit educational program for people aged 50 and older. The grant is to support the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Temple's Center City campus, which offers courses, field trips, clubs and lectures to its members, many of whom also lead the activities or serve as instructors.
